GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 7th. May, 1915.

I have the honour to transmit a copy of a

·letter which was addressed to the Colonial Secretary by His

Majesty's Acting Consul at Saigon with reference to a lady of

British nationality who reached Saigon from Singapore in a

destitute condition.

2.

Mrs. Butler arrived in Hongkong on the 13th.

April and I arranged that she should be sent to England at the earliest opportunity and a passage has been booked for her on the P. & 0. 5.S."Sardinia" which leaves Hongkong today.

3.

Mrs. Butler is very desirous of obtaining some employment on reaching England and has asked that her case might be brought to your notice with a view to enabling her to get an appointment on the Customs Staff. I understand that she is able to speak several languages which may be an asset in assisting her to obtain the employment she desires. She states that her father was English and her mother Russian.

I have the honour to be,

sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LEWIS HARCOURT, M.P.,
